Small Groups

The Bible says that one of the things that early Christians devoted themselves to was 'fellowship', and that they met often both in places of worship and in homes (Acts 2:42).

At St Alban's, we are convinced that one of the essential aspects of our calling together is meeting in smaller groups to study God's Word and apply it to our lives, to pray together, and to support and encourage each other. Jesus said that the world would know that we are His disciples by our love for each other (John 13:35), and one of the ways that we grow in our love is by spending time together.

Some of our Small Groups meet at the church and some meet in homes, some meet during the day, and some in the evening. You are more than welcome to come and visit one of them for yourself.

Church Vision

“In all our affliction, I am overflowing with joy” (2 Corinthians 7:4)

Our vision for our church is 'To be overflowing in our Joy in Jesus’. Christian joy is, as one author puts it “a delight in God for the sheer beauty and worth of who He is.” Its opposite is hopelessness and despair, its counterfeit is an elation that is based on experiencing blessings not the Blesser, causing mood swings based on circumstances.

Christian joy is not simply a she’ll be right attitude despite our situation, or being overly optimistic about the future. It isn’t simply feeling happy in our present circumstances, nor is it incompatible with sorrow and grief. It is a delight in God for the sheer beauty and worth of who He is. And when we understand that, it has an effect not only on our lives, but it overflows to others.

I call this the cascade principle. Let me explain. I want you to imagine a 3 tiered cascade. The water pours into the smallest tier at the top. Then what happens? It overflows to the second tier. Then what happens? When it gets full enough it overflows to the third tier.  Now let’s think about that principle when it comes to a church. Each of us is filled up with joy that comes from the Lord, and because it is from Him it is never-ending. This is the top of the cascade. Therefore our personal devotional time is the first tier. This is the intimate relationship we enjoy with our God through Bible reading, Christian meditation and prayer.

This then overflows to our Church community as we share the joy we are experiencing personally, which is our second tier. This includes everything we do as a gathered Church community, from Sunday services, to Small Groups, and even to morning tea. As each of us is filled up, our joy then overflows to those in our Church, which then fills them up too.

This in turn, has an effect on those we meet in the village, which is the third tier of our cascade. We can’t help talking about the joy we have found in the Lord, and how much we are loving gathering with others who share this same joy. If you have ever watched a new Christian share their faith? It is like a new diet, a gym membership and a Tupper-party all rolled into one. But like any cascade, it doesn’t finish with the village, it keeps flowing to all the areas around.

This is the cascade principle of overflowing joy. The more joy we get from the Lord, the more it overflows to others.

What do we believe?

St Alban's is an evangelical congregation in the Anglican tradition. As such we hold God's Word to be our guide and authority in all matters of faith, and affirm the historic creeds that were agreed upon during the first centuries of the Church: the Apostle's Creed and the Nicene Creed.

You can investigate what the Bible teaches about God, His Son Jesus and our need for a relationship with him by visiting Christianity.net.au.
