Children: Jesus in Bethany (Mark 14:3-9)

READ & WATCH

Our story this week comes from Mark 14:3-9. You can watch a great video retelling this story from the team at Saddleback Kids here:

THINK

  1. What did the woman do for Jesus?

  2. Why did this action make people angry?

  3. How did Jesus respond to them?

  4. What does this tell us about Jesus?

EXPLORE

The story of Jesus being anointed in Bethany can be found in all four of the Gospels. In the Gospel of John, the woman is named Mary. Here is a wordsearch and colouring page to help you think about the story further.

In the Gospels the woman pours very expensive perfume on Jesus. Have you ever tried to make perfume before? Here is a simple recipe if you’d like to have a go. Some people present at the dinner were upset because they thought the woman was wasting very expensive perfume. What’s the most expensive thing you own? Why not pick five objects around your house, line them, and see if your family can put them in order from least to most expensive! You could also test your family by printing out this puzzle and seeing who can put it together the fastest! As you do, describe the picture to them so they can better understand the story too.

PRAY

The woman in our story gave Jesus the most expensive thing she had because she knew Jesus was the most important person she had ever met. This week, why not use the acronym JOY to guide your prayer time. J - Jesus (thank Jesus for who he is and what he has done for you), O - Others (prayer for other people who are in need of Jesus help), Y - You (ask God to help you with something this week too).

SING

Time to sing! Here is a traditional song with a new twist - This Little Light of Mine.

You can also enjoy this classic Colin Buchanan song called ‘God United’. If you’d like to sing along you can click the CC button at the bottom of the video to get subtitles.
