Children: Jesus calls Matthew (Mark 2:13-17)

READ AND WATCH

Today we continue with our series looking at people Jesus met. We have already looked at John the Baptist and a man who couldn't walk. This week we meet Matthew (Levi), a tax collector who left everything to follow Jesus! You can find his story in Mark 2:13-17. You can also watch this video retelling to delve into the story further.

THINK

1. What was Matthews job?

2. Why did the Pharisees get upset with Jesus?

3. Why is Jesus talking about sick people and doctors in verse 17?

4. What does this story teach us about Jesus?

EXPLORE

Let's dig a little deeper! Check out this word search, or if you want something a bit different here is a crossword puzzle to test your memory of the story. You can also investigate this famous painting of the story by an artist named Caravaggio. Do you think you could draw or paint your own picture of the story?

As you know, Matthew was a tax collector, which means he was someone who collected money from the Jewish people to pay to the Romans (this did not make him popular!) Why don't you see if you can find some coins in your home and have a crack at using them to do some art! Alternatively, check out these ideas for creating a money box using things you can find around your house.

PRAY

This week why don't you spend some time praying for a friend who doesn't know Jesus? I bet no one thought a tax collector could be friends with Jesus but we know that Jesus wants to be friends with everyone! Ask God to give you the opportunity to share what you know about Jesus with your friend that they might become his friend too.

SING

How are you going learning the moves to our songs each week? Here is a song about how Jesus is the best friend we can have. We can also remember that the same Jesus is also the King of all!
